Two faculty members of the Northeastern University’s Health in Justice Action Lab argue that the DEA shares significant blame in the increase in opioid overdose deaths over the last 20 years. Increasingly aggressive and expensive law enforcement efforts from the DEA have failed to curb opioid overdoes or effectively regulate legitimate controlled medication needs. A reinvention of the DEA is needed to allow state and local programs favoring treatment over enforcement to operate.
