All 55 eligible U.S. states and territories have agreed to support Purdue Pharma’s proposed $7.4 billion settlement to resolve thousands of lawsuits alleging that the company’s marketing of its opioid analgesic products helped fuel the opioid crisis. The agreement marked a major milestone following the Supreme Court’s rejection of an earlier bankruptcy-based settlement, which had delayed resolution and forced renewed negotiations with states, local governments, and other stakeholders. If approved, the settlement would allocate billions of dollars toward substance use treatment, prevention, and recovery programs nationwide. The settlement requires the Sackler family, who own Purdue Pharma, to pay $1.5 billion and give up control of the company.
