Newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest the United States may be turning a corner after years of record-high drug poisoning deaths. According to provisional estimates, there were 71,542 fatal drug poisonings in the 12 months ending in October 2025, about a 17 percent decline compared to the previous year. Notably, total deaths in 2025 are projected to be roughly 35 percent lower than the peak reached in 2023. Researchers and policymakers have pointed to several possible reasons for this shift, including expanded access to naloxone, wider use of medications for opioid use disorder, greater public awareness, and disruptions in illicit fentanyl supply chains.
