CDC researchers studying death certificates of drug overdose victims found that fentanyl and heroin were the most frequently identified drugs in the medical reports. Researchers found that heroine overdoes have been climbing steadily since 2011, but overdoses deaths involving fentanyl spiked after 2014 and became the number one overdose drug in 2016. The CDC also found that a majority of fatal overdoses involved more than one drug.
