The National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports a broad range of research on cannabis, cannabinoids, and related compounds. NIH-funded research includes studies of the whole or parts of the Cannabis sativa plant, extracts and enriched extracts from cannabis, cannabinoid compounds derived from cannabis extracts, non-cannabinoid elements of cannabis, synthetic cannabinoids, and components of the endocannabinoid system. In particular, the NIH is interested in the possible therapeutic uses of cannabis and its constituents.
The NIH offers cannabinoid grants for a variety of research topics, including studies on the societal impacts and human health impacts of changing cannabis laws, the classes of cannabinoids, and the therapeutic properties of cannabinoids, among others.
