Hospitalizations from amphetamine use have increased by 270 percent since 2008, far outpacing the increase in opioid-related hospitalizations. According to a 2018 study, amphetamine-related hospitalizations cost the health care system almost $2.2 billion per year, with Medicaid being the largest payer. The study also found that amphetamine-related hospitalizations have a 29 percent higher mortality rate than all other hospitalizations.
