Increasing rates from so-called “deaths of despair,” are not just linked to rising opioid and drug abuse, but a larger trend of economic and social stresses on individuals that results in harm to health. Reduced income and economic opportunities, diminished social support networks, and increased perception of hopelessness are significant causes in the rise in drug use, suicide, and premature deaths in middle-aged persons.
