A statement released by six medical associations calls on politicians to end the unnecessary, inappropriate political interference with the patient-physician relationship. The organizations that issued the statement represent more than 560,000 physicians and medical students working on the frontlines of health care.
The statement alludes to enforcement actions against physicians who prescribe opioids and other controlled medications.
The statement reads, “physicians should never face imprisonment or other penalties for providing necessary care. These laws force physicians to decide between their patients and facing criminal proceedings.”
The organizations further assert that “physicians must be able to practice medicine that is informed by their years of medical education, training, experience, and the available evidence, freely and without threat of criminal punishment.”
The organizations urge policy makers to advance policies that protect the patient-physician relationship and expand access to evidence-based health care.
The American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Physicians, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and American Osteopathic Association issued the statement.
